WARREN ROAD
Located on a steep wooded site in Walnut Creek, this home takes advantage of seeping southern views out over rolling hills populated with oak trees and other native flora. The original home was built at the edge of a steep ravine that slopes down to a creek below, and the new work required careful consideration of topography and structural supports. A two story addition takes advantage of the slope, looking like a single story from the street, however incorporating two dramatic stories of glass on the rear yard side. The material palette is a dark and textural shou sugi ban, a method of sealing cedar siding by creating a light char on the exterior, combined with a natural zinc roof, and warm wood decking. A pool, spa, and firepit create an active outdoor space that makes up for the lack of a usable back yard due to the steep terrain. The design provides a graceful addition to the older farmhouse style residence from the street, and a dramatic and contemporary presence on the private side of the home.
